How To Write
Here are a few links to help improve your writing skills. I will be using the concepts found in these links when grading your assignments this year. IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU REFER TO THEM WHENEVER YOU DO A WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT. I would recommend stapling the document entitled "How to Write in High School" into the first page of your notebook where it will serve as a handy reference guide.
How to Write in High School
Evaluate Your Writing Style - This is a little compare and contrast worksheet. See how your writing style stacks up against the standard. Is your writing style a level one, two or three?
MLA Style Sheet - This may also be found on the WHS Library Web Page. Use it when writing your Works Cited pages.
How to Cite Sources - this link will take you to a page explaining how to do in text citations. CHECK OUT THE ENTIRE WEBSITE. It will walk you through everthing from how to conduct research, how to do in text citations, when to cite things, how to do a Works Cited page and many other invaluable lessons. USE THIS SITE WHEN WRITING RESEARCH PAPERS.
Things an Essay Should Include - a handy dandy little guide to keep you on the right track.
The Dangers of Wikkipedia - a little article that helps explain why we do not use Wikkipedia as a valid research tool in this class.
"How to Lower Your Grade In Humanities" - For those who thought Mr. J made up all of these rules on his own, take a look at this little gem. It was written by a college professor who tells it like it is.
A Sample of Good Writing - This was a paper, written by one of the members of the ninth grade academic level Western Civilizations class. It is not perfect, but it is pretty darned good. Compare your work to this work and see how it stacks up.
An example of how NOT to answer. Note how the answers on this worksheet are not even written in complete sentences. How can you correctly answer something if it is not written in a clear, understandable, grammatically correct format?
Tips for presenting using PowerPoint - O.K. I realize that this does not specifically deal with writing, but it is worth checking out anyway.
Advise from you classmates- Here are some bits of advise from your fellow students at WHS. Does any of this sound familiar?
