Should we worry about this guy or just write him off? What might Sun Tzu say about the idea?

I think that is the actual implication of a mission, one can never have too many units available. It is always preferable to have an excess of troops rather than being vastly outnumbered. Numbers alone do not ensure victory, but the a numerical advantage is significant and allows for greater mobility and more options in strategic planning. However, it is important that the use of numerous units in coordination does not reduce the efficiency of any one units. Should different units be used incorrectly, they may impede one another. Also when planning for an invasion with a larger force than the defensive, it is important that this numerical advantage does not create a sense of overconfidence, or a belief that numbers alone can be substitute for careful planning. Also, having numerous units to deploy tends to lead to more potential variation, which can overcomplicate a mission, contradicting the principle of simplicity. As long as the availability of “too many” troops does not make each on ineffective or overcomplicate the overall plan it should not be viewed as a negative factor.

I figure carpet bombing the whole capital city of Bugatti would constitute the principles of MASS, Unity of Command (since the bombers are all from one country), MANUEVER (since we are hitting them from an unexpected direction) SURPRISE (assuming they do not know we are coming), Simplicity (after all "bomb them back into the stone age" is a pretty simple concept, OBJECTIVE (destroy the city - easy enough to understand) and OFFENSIVE (I am sure there can be no doubt that wiping out the city would be rather offensive - and yes the pun is intended). It also adheres to Sun Tzu's idea of not fighting in cities and attacking as a thunderbolt from above. So what do you think? Mr. J

As great as the idea might be and as many principles of war that it includes the principles of war don't always coincide with your orders/objectives. For example, specifically referring to this operation, one of our orders are to "conduct the campaign in a matter consistent with the laws of war to include the limitation, in as much possible, of damage and destruction to the civilian population and infrastructure". that being said rules out carpet bombing of the city because doing so would kill many Innocent lives and totally destroy the infrastructure of the city.

There is a link to the "Greatest Person Bracket" above. The seedings are based on your votes for the greatest person from Ancient Greece to 1800. Take a look at the matchups. Who do you like in the first round and why? We will vote on a couple of these matchups in class each day until we determine a champion. It should be fun! Feel free to give your argument here on this thread Mr. J

I don't think this is still going on, but why not take a crack at it...
I think the most important person in that time is Francis Drake. The two main reasons I think of is that he was the first person to lead a voyage around the world (And live that is) gaining much needed knowledge of the world for Europe. From then, Drake became a pirate VS mostly Spanish merchants in the Atlantic. And even later in his life, he helped saved England from the huge Spanish Armada.
Doesn't sound that important right off the bat, but after a little while, England survived, and Spain was never the same, eventually leading to its decline in world politics. After that, England gained strength through the Industrial Revolution. Becoming the leading power in the world, with France busy with its Revolution. During/After the Industrial Revolution, Britian became the worlds biggest empire, holding colones throughout the world including India, Australia, South Africa, Gibraltar and the Suez Cannal. Now with British Imperialism spread throughout the world, it would be changed forever, places in Africa that are still today effected by the British Imperialism.
Many things happened in order for these to happen, but I felt without Drake, Britian wouldn't be alive today, much less in those times, the biggest Empire on Earth. And who knows, it could have been Spain, after they captured England.

Whether it is something big, or just a small detail. Weigh in with your opinion. What about World War II would you like to learn more about - if we had more time in class?
